Older people in Cook County, Illinois are exempted from property tax
Thanks to a new measure approved by the
Illinois Senate, nearly 300,000 elderly people in Cook County, Illinois no longer required to submit applications annually to continue to receive property tax exemptions. According to the current law, those wishing to be exempted from tax must submit annual documents to county evaluators.
The Senate measure reconfirms the exceptions of older people over 65 years of age and can continue to be exempted even if they do not reapply. In addition, older people who do not know they are eligible for last year's tax exemption can still apply for tax reduction retrospectively.
